Aubusson Weaves First Tolkien

Open Door Guests at First Showing

Open Door were the association invited to represent the British community in Nouvelle Aquitainne when the first tapestry based on JRR Tolkien's illustrations was cut from the loom on Friday 6th April at the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie, Aubusson.

Only invited guests were permitted to attend the unveiling and it was in recognition of the project which Open Door are in the process of rolling out that we were chosen. The project aims to link into the Cité's “Aubusson Weaves Tolkien” project to encourage people to read more often and promote awareness of the works of Tolkien and other 'mythological' writers such as CS Lewis, Phillip Pullman, JK Rowling and George RR Martin.

First discussions took place with the Cité's Director, Emmanuel Gerrard, in November last year and we were invited to join other associations from the British community at the beginning of December to see work beginning on weaving the first tapestry “bilbo comes to the huts of the river elves”.

On April 6th, the president was able to explain some of our project to Baillie Tolkien, wife of JRR Tolkien's son Christopher, who expressed great enthusiasm for the proposals. He also had the opportunity to update Senator Lozach - who has been very supportive - on our progress to date.

Open Door Reads Tolkien

Eight of our members attended the ceremony in April and six of those were the team that will be responsible for our flagship programme 'Open Door Reads Tolkien' in conjunction with the association “Partage de Lectures”. This will open with readings of extracts from The Hobbitt in English and French to be held at the bibliothèque in Bourganeuf and backed up by a display of Tolkien's books provided by the Creuse library service and some of his illustrative works loaned by the Cité.

Rehearsals are well underway for this although an exact date is yet to be confirmed.

Le vendredi 6 avril 2018 à la Cité internationale de la tapisserie à Aubusson a eu lieu la tombée de métier de la première tapisserie exécutée a partir d'illustration de JRR Tolkien. Parmi les invités, issus de la region Nouvelle Aquitaine, l'association Open Door représentait la communauté britannique. Ce privilège est dû a notre engagement pour la promotion de l'oeuvre de Tolkien et d'autres écrivains «mythologiques» comme CS Lewis, Phillip Pullman, JK Rowling et George RR Martin.

Les premières discussions ont eu lieu avec le directeur de la Cité, Emmanuel Gerard, en novembre dernier et nous avons été invités à rejoindre d'autres associations de la communauté britannique début décembre pour voir l'avancement du tissage de la première tapisserie "bilbo comes to the huts of the river elves".

Le 6 avril, le président a pu expliquer une partie de notre projet à Baillie Tolkien, épouse du fils de JRR Tolkien, Christopher, qui a exprimé un grand enthousiasme pour les propositions. Il a également eu l'occasion d'informer le sénateur Lozach - qui a été très favorable - de nos progrès à ce jour.

Open Door  lit Tolkien

Huit de nos membres ont assisté à la cérémonie en avril et six d'entre eux étaient l'équipe qui sera responsable de notre programme « Open Door Lit Tolkien » en partenariat avec l'association «Partage de Lectures». Cela s'ouvrira avec des lectures d'extraits de The Hobbitt en anglais et en français qui se tiendront à la bibliothèque de Bourganeuf et seront étayées par une exposition des livres de Tolkien fournis par le service de la bibliothèque departemantal de la Creuse et quelques-unes de ses œuvres illustratives prêtées par la Cité.

Les répétitions sont bien avancées mais une date précise reste à confirmer.
