Welcome to the Association OPEN DOOR

The Association Open Door exists to encourage the practical exchange of cultural information
and experience between French and English-speaking people residing permanently or part-time
in the Limousin and surrounding areas.

Moral report 2017

This has been our first year of full-scale operation as an Association. We have been in existence since 2015 but, realistically, in name only. Until this year our work has been directed towards the opening of an English-language library here in St. Pardoux-Morterolles – even our highly successful “Afternoon Tea” in April 2016 was directed towards gaining much-needed funds for the library.

In the process of doing that, however, we've built up a strong team of members – and even friends who are not members of the association but have always supported our aims. The process hasn't always been easy,  as with any group of dedicated and strong-minded people, but I believe that our group now is, all-round, as strong as any in the region.

What have we done?

We've established a solid membership and a solid group of supporters. We need to convert more supporters into active members and persuade more members to involve themselves in all of our activities.

We've opened the library. A simple statement but a lot of work. We have less books and more shelves than we started with but we have a much better quality of books and the space to continue adding more. Quality is difficult to define and we have to balance between “classic” and “popular” - both have a place in our library but poor-quality cast-offs don't. We've continued to add to our extensive library of DVDs and introduced a small range of talking books, which we will be looking to expand. This year we also established a  small children's section with a number of regular favourites both for summer visitors and French residents who might want to practise their English. We now also have a number of jigsaw puzzles that members may borrow.

Equally importantly, we began our "cultural exchange" programme enabling our British members to learn more of French life and our French members to gain some knowledge of   British people in this region. We held four events in 2017, all of which were incredibly well organised.

Our first, a spring walk through the Foret d'Epagne in Sauviat, was blessed with good weather and knowledgeable guides from the Association Gabbro. Our second, more  adventurous, excursion took us to the historic town of Allassac in the Corrèze where both French and English learned a great deal about the re-emerging wines of the Corrèze around Saillant. An excellent lunch, home-prepared from local produce, was followed by a guided visit to the ancient Tour Cesar and to the chapel in Saillant with its stained-glass windows designed by Chagall. Torrential rain in the afternoon curtailed our picnic plans   but we were saved by the generosity of the vineyard Coteaux de le Vézère.

Rain also caused the postponement of our guided walk to view (and hear) the birds around Augerolles. However the generosity of our guide from the association SEPOL, Max Richer, allowed us to re-schedule for the following Monday.

The year's final event, a visit to the studio of silkscreen artist Alastair Riley in St. Medard-la-Rochette, was blessed with fine weather and a large party were able to watch outdoors as the artist demonstrated and explained his technique.

This year's more extensive and varied programme is already underway and information can be found on the website which Bernard Bonnavaud set up for us in 2017.

As president I can say that I am pleased with what we have acheived in 2017. Everything that we have done, we have done well and the messages that I receive regularly are all complimentary.

But I must also sound some words of warning. Having been involved with many associations over the years, I can confidently say that any organisation that appeals only to a limited number of people and relies on a handful to organise the events and make the decisions will almost certainly fail. Our priority this year must be to attract new and active members to this association – the library is never going to attract "passing trade" and we will always face competition for our events from the many other excellent associations in the region.

We've started well, as I said, but we have to keep building on that start in 2018.
